I shared with you a few weeks ago memories of my first trip to the land of Israel in my weekly newsletter, The LOKA Traveler. I’m going to share a bit more here with you now, as I feel strongly led to do so.
I still cannot tell you exactly why I felt such a pull to get me to the land, however, it was unrelenting. I just knew I had to go. I had been traveling quite a bit during that time, and it was a personal sacrifice to take another trip. Before I landed in Tel Aviv for the very first time, I felt like I was going home. I was pretty exhausted physically, yet my spirit leapt with joy! I came to realize that my spirit was yearning to go home.
It amazes me how The Lord reveals His truths and secrets to us in layers. When I was there, I loved it! It was so much more than I expected, in every way possible. It had everything I wanted and loved— warm weather, great beaches, amazing food, history, culture, ethnic diversity, and so much more. And (this is for the ladies) the men are very attractive— a real “blessing“! 😉 Anywayyy…. now, several years later, He is still revealing things to me about my time there. Amazing!
One of the first things I did when I arrived in Israel was go to Caesarea National Park. It was perfect, and I was soooo…. glad to be off that plane and out in the fresh air by the sea! It was like an awakening. Pure shalom….
Israel also has some of the finest tour guides I’ve encountered. Shafik, who was my guide for the first part of this trip, is pictured above standing next to a cartouche. He constantly amazed me at how much he knew about…. well, everything! Can you imagine having to train to learn about the most sacred, most revered, hotly contested country on earth??
To say that Israel is a land of contrasts is, of course, an overwhelming understatement! Here (above), the oldest Christian church in Nazareth sits practically next door to the local taxi service (at least they named it Mary’s Well!)! This is Israel…. history and modernity, side my side. Speaking of contrasts, there are no greater polar opposites than Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. I love them both! Tel Aviv for its beautiful beaches, chic surroundings, and vibrancy. But Yerushalayim (Jerusalem)…. it’s everything! The most moving moment I’ve had in the land was in Jerusalem, at the Kotel (Western Wall). The Lord spoke to me there, and I will never forget what He told me. Never.
While I’ve traveled a lot, to many beautiful, fascinating, incredible places, learned a great deal, and had lots of fun, no place has ever actually changed the course of my life. We hear this phrase a lot, so we don’t fully appreciate the magnitude of it. The thing about “changing course” is that you don’t realize how great the shift is immediately. It takes time.
And while I knew for certain that things were going to be different in my life after going to Israel, I had no idea of the journey The Lord was about to take me on. While salvation is a free gift, the journey will cost you everything. Why shouldn’t it?? It cost Yeshua (Jesus) everything. Imagine all He felt, as His sweat was as great drops of blood in the Garden of Gethsemene (see below). Why should Yeshua have to bear the cross alone?
I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of people say that once you go to Israel, you’ll never be the same. It’s true! Being in The Promised Land changes you. And the change could be so profound that it actually changes the course of your life, like it did for me, or perhaps defines your path a bit better so that you can continue to move forward in the right direction. Either way, it will shape and refine your future.
