I want to share with you a joyful tradition I’ve come to love. If you’ve been doing it, then you already know how wonderful it is— and if you haven’t, you’re about to find out…. and I’m sure you’ll be eager to start now or participate next year! It’s the Counting of the Omer. The Counting of the Omer takes place each year between the biblical feasts of Passover and Shavuot (Feast of Weeks/Pentecost). This is such a special, blessed, and grossly underrated time of celebration and anticipation! How many of you have been counting with me? How many of you will join in for next year? How many of you even know what I’m talking about??
You may be thinking “what exactly is an omer, and why should I be counting it?”. The Hebrew word “omer” means “sheaf“. A sheaf is a bundle of grain stalks. The counting of the omer (sheaf) begins after Passover and ends fifty days later at Shavuot (Feast of Weeks). It is a biblical commandment found in Leviticus 23:15-16, which is why we as believers in and followers of Yeshua (Jesus) continue to do it.
The Omer is counted at night, and while standing. A special Sefirat Ha Omer (Counting of the Omer) blessing is spoken, along with stating how many days and weeks have been counted. Then, a specific portion of Psalm 119 is read aloud. The “counting” comes to a close each night with an additional blessing that reminds of how long before the Father’s promised revelation, blessing, and fresh anointing of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit). It’s such a beautiful and blessed time !
I am writing this in May 2013, and as of this writing, there are just a few more days to go before the joyous celebration of the Feast of Weeks! This is indeed a time when the Lord will do great miracles and fill us with a fresh pouring out of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit).
If you’ve never heard of this wonderful tradition and haven’t been counting, don’t worry, just get started now or next year if Shavuot has passed! What better time could you find to prepare yourself and your family for a great move of God?
And remember, the Lord desperately wants to bless you, His sons and daughters. Go ahead and receive your blessing through obedience to His word. Once you begin to do this, you’ll have no regrets…. and you’ll never look back!
Shalom and love,
“The Messianic Mama”
